A Brief History

I got married in September of 2008. I was on top of the world. A beautiful wife, good friends and a job I liked, what more could one ask for? Fast forward to January 20, 2009. A new president is sworn in and gives a speech of hope and change. Shortly after the speech change happened. I was laid-off from my job, just like one-in-ten other Californians. It was a bad day when I got laid-off, but not completely unexpected. At least my wife was still working and I would definitely be eligible for unemployment benefits. Everything was going to be fine.

Fast forward to April, 2009. It was an average evening, but my wife wasn’t feeling well. In fact, she hadn’t felt well for the past week or so. She was constantly exhausted, had hardly any appetite and was continuously nauseous. I felt bad, but what could I do? I’m not a doctor. She went into the bedroom to rest, or so I thought. A few minutes later she called for me and asked if I could come in there. I opened the door and saw her standing there with an Early Pregnancy Test in her hand. There was nothing more that needed to be said. “Well, that sure answers a lot of questions,” I thought.  And now the ride begins.

We had been trying to get pregnant for a while. We pulled the proverbial goalie shortly after our wedding. But, neither of us really expected that we’d have much success right away. After all, some people try for years without any success. I guess we’re among the lucky ones. Of course we see this as great news, but the reality of our situation is also jumping up and down in front of us like the 800 lb. gorilla. We need to move from our smallish, upstairs apartment sooner than later; I’m unemployed; the economy is in the shitter and unemployment is at 10% in California. This should be a wild ride. Stay tuned.

Cheers!

Papi
