To raise a child born in 2009, to the age of 18, it will cost parents about $304,722 if the child does not go to college. Adding the cost of a four year, public university, parents can expect to pay approximately $355,906 (source). The per-year breakdown is as follows:
- Housing: $6583
- Food: $2443
- Transportation: $2245
- Clothing: $687
- Healthcare: $863
- Childcare/Education: $2183
- Miscellaneous: $1973
- College: $12796

Needless to say, given the above breakdown, there’s going to be some belt tightening over the foreseeable future, and a definite need for supplemental income.
